so the kid goes 8 mph for an HOUR before the father starts after him…
if the kid is going 8 miles on the hour and it takes an hour for the dad to come out, how far away is he by the time the dad comes out??
well 8 mph for an hour means he’s 8 miles away
so the kid is 8 miles away, and the dad’s gotta catch him in 15 minutes…well common sense tells me that i should prob figure out how far the boy’s gonna go in 15 minutes, so i can see how far the dad has to go to catch him…
well the kid is already 8 miles away…he’s going 8 mph for 15 minutes…now there’s 60 minutes in an hour…so lets see what fraction of the full hour 15 minutes is…
15/60 = 1/4 = 0.25
so 15 minutes is a quarter hour…if he’s goin 8 mph…then in a quarter of that hour, he’s gonna go 8 x (1/4) = 2 miles
add that to the already existing 8 miles…and u get that he’s gonna be 10 miles away when the father has to catch him
the dad has to go 10 miles in 15 minutes…that tell u the speed…but lets try to get that into miles per hour
10 miles in 15 minutes means 10 miles in 15/60 = 0.25 of an hour
10 miles in a quarter hour = 40 miles an hour

same way
in 4 hrs, bill went 9 mph x 4 hrs = 36 miles
that’s when charles started and he took bill over in 2 hrs
so in those extra 2 hrs, bill went 9 mph x 2 = 18 additional miles
total distance for bill = 36 + 18 = 54 miles
charles went those 54 miles in 2 hrs
54 / 2 = 27 mph
hope this helps
